Redundancy

You are faced with redundancy due to changes, downsizing or rightsizing. These may be suddenly thrust upon you or may have evolved over a period of time. You may be the only person receiving a package or there may be a group. Change may have been brought about because of internal shuffles that result in your position being untenable or you have decided to pursue other career goals and receive a goodwill package. You are on or going to be on the job market. What to do?

In a nutshell…prepare, plan & act!

Your job now is to get that job. It must be your sole occupation and task. Apart from keeping fit and continuing with your normal activities, you must now schedule activities that you must complete. These are;

  • Clearly define what it is you want from the future, what job, what prospects. These are your objectives for yourself, Limited. Set yourself some goals that are achievable, clear and are realistic.
  • Define what you want to do? What job sector, what job and where you want it!
  • Have a look at what is written elsewhere on this career centre and check back regularly as we update and refine it.

      • Build your CV/resume from scratch
      • Create a list of every recruitment and search agency in your area and beyond. Write to them with your details.
      • Create a list of the newspapers and magazines that will have jobs and appointment sections. Read them every week/day and apply for every job that appeals.
      • Create a list of companies that are likely to have a job for a person with your skills. Write to them.
      • Make a list of all the people that you know, worked with, or have met in social, business or learning circles. Call them for a brief chat. Let them know that you are in the market and ask that they keep an ear to the ground for you should they hear of anything that might interest you. Call them periodically but not so often as to be a nuisance. Don't expect anything, don't wait for them to call you and let them know that you understand that they may not come across anything and that that's acceptable. You just want to contact as many people as possible in the hope that at least one will call you with some sort of a job. After all you only need one job!
      • Get out into the marketplace and advertise your availability.
      • Tell people that you are seeking employment in whatever your field of expertise is. Let people know. You were made redundant it happens…move on and start the next phase of your career building on your experience.
      At irelandHiring.com we have created a section where you can advertise yourself as a candidate to 'Be Headhunted'. It costs you nothing and will put you before all the employers actively seeking candidates.

      We have also created a section called 'Marketplace' where you can advertise your skills as a self-employed person. Perhaps there is a job out there for you selling your experience. Perhaps now is the time to be self-employed.

      Happy hunting and let us know how you get on. Don't forget to use our forums - an ideal way to network.
